Oat Bran Smooothie!? Jan 11, 2009 After eating two oat bran muffins every day for a couple years, I became so sick of them that it became difficult to choke them down. After becoming fond of Jamba Juice(tm) smoothies, it occurred to me that Oat Bran was the ideal "Fibre Boost", and I developed the following recipe, which I consume daily as maybe 50% of my entire diet! (The odometer on my K-Tec blender currently reads 2267). At 66 grams per day, a 50lb bag of Honeyville Oat Bran lasts just about a year, so keep it in airtight container! I mix 2 parts Oat Bran to one part hulled hemp seed (Nutiva organic) and keep the mixture in 1/2 gallon (1kg) mason jars in the freezer. Then I add 100 grams of the mixture into the blender along with the rest of the ingredients.
Rick's Anti-cholesterol Oat & Hemp Smooothie Recipe:
Add the following ingredients to your blender:
(a digital scale makes it easy!)
1 cup plain lowfat yogurt (225 grams) (refrigerated)
1 cup soy milk (Vanilla flavor suggested) (241 grams) (refrigerated)
1/2 cup (66 grams) oat bran (frozen)
1/4 cup (33 grams) hulled hemp seed (frozen)
1 sliced up banana (frozen)
2 Oz (50 grams) frozen orange juice concentrate
In a bowl, weigh out 300 grams of frozen berries (Strawberries, raspberries, mixed berries, peaches, whatever)
Start up the blender, and gradually add in the frozen fruit as it is assimilated into the mixture. When smooth and frosty like a milk shake, you're ready!

Ships in a plain brown wrapper Jan 01, 2007 So nobody will know you're gonna eat it.
A few years back, my blood cholesterol got out of control. The docs wanted me to stop doing everything I loved: sausage links, eggs and bacon, you know the routine. Thankfully, a friend had been through the same ordeal. He turned me on to oat bran. It worked a miracle for him, kept him off the medication, which nobody will admit decreases the libido and can lead to impotence, but it does, and his love life was perfectly fine still.
Mine isn't, but it isn't because of the cholesterol meds. I don't need them. It's the high blood pressure meds. Did I mention they nut 'ya too?
It isn't the cholesterol meds cause I eat oat bran. That's right. I'm a bran gulper. I take mine in the form of apple-raisin muffins. One a day. Oh god, sometimes, when the cupboard is bare, I eat two or three. I even sprinkle it into my stir fry beef. I feel so daring when I let myself do it.
We bran gobblers are a discriminating group. None of this coarse stuff for us. We want the fine-grind - to suck every last drop of that nasty cholesterol outta our gut. More surface area when it's ground fine, get it?
Trouble is, there's such a stigma attached, supermarkets don't carry it. Sure, they have condoms and K-Y jelly on display, you can even buy a Fleet emema. What do you suppose a person does with one of them? But fine Oat Bran? No way.
What's an addict to do? We gotta have our supply. There's no choice but to buy on-line in bulk and let me tell you honey, that's where Honeyville Farms comes to the rescue. A fifty pound sack for what amounts to about a buck and a half a pound. How can you beat that?
There is one little problem. A batch of muffins is 2 1/4 cups of bran. You don't want to even try to figure out how long fifty pounds is gonna last you. Fifty pounds might even be a lifetime supply, but hey, how much you figure what's that drug...oh yeah, Lipitor, how much you figure a lifetime supply of THAT is gonna cost? Never mind the limp noodle syndrome, with Oat Bran the savings in dollars is gonna be humongous.
Ready to try it yourself?
Here's a healthy recipe for kick-rear muffins*:
2 1/4 cups fine Oat Bran
1 1/2 cups skim milk
3/8 cup Olivio - melted (instead of butter)
3/4 cup honey
1 cup raisins
1 1/2 eggs (use eggbeaters)
3/4 teaspoon cinammon
3 large apples - grated (or fruit of choice - blueberries, etc)
instructions: Soak raisins in hot water. Soak oat bran in milk 5 minutes while you set out Olivio, honey, fruit, eggs and cinammon. Combine first part ingredients, including raisins.
_______________________________________
2 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 tablespoon Baking Powder
In another bowl, mix last three ingredients. Fold in mixture just enough to blend.
Bake in 400f for 20 minutes. Makes 18-20 muffins.
