Odd smell over time, does the job though Jul 30, 2010 I bought a giant box of these for work related events. We feed large groups of people for various community forums, and I'm the "green" girl of the company. These seemed like the right choice.
The knife actually cuts some (though, don't think you're going to cut a steak with it... but why on earth would you use disposable cutlery to cut a sirloin anyhow?), the fork prongs stay on while you eat, and of course, the spoon scoops. They do their job.
The set of three come wrapped together in a plastic (potato starch too, I believe) bag. Each place setting individually wrapped. And they have a slight odd smell and even taste... They are made of potato starch, so I guess that's normal. Not a bad smell, but definitely noticeable, as multiple colleagues mentioned it.
The smell gets worse over time, however. We put the box of them in our storage room (which stay very cold, by the way), and several months later, a coworker grabbed a set to eat his lunch when he forgot his own utensils. He was wowwed at how strongly they smelled by that time, and I couldn't agree more.
If you're using them soon, and going for the green eco thing, a good purchase, and I got them at a great bargain on Amazon. I just wouldn't grab a box to keep on hand indefinitely for future use.
Wrapped in Plastic???? Apr 02, 2010 These biodegradable sets are individually wrapped in plastic!!!!!!!!!!! (If the plastic is also "biodegradable", it sure would be good to know, otherwise it was a net gain of ZERO on the ecological front, and a whole lot more $$$$ than plastic cutlery.
Compostable cutlery Jan 09, 2010 We're having work done on our kitchen so I needed compostable cutlery, plates, etc. and I bought this product via Amazon. It's hard to buy these items as a consumer because they are distributed wholesale to restaurants and other businesses. I'm glad Stalkmarket distributes Jaya via Amazon. The cutlery is great but it is packaged in individual plastic sleeves. There is no info about how to dispose of this packaging on the Amazon site or on the Stalkmarket shipping box. I checked the company's website - they send you to a .pdf to get info on Jaya ([..]In brief, it says:
"Made from all-natural and sustainable resources
* Made from earth-friendly, renewable CPLA (Crystalized Polylactic Acid)
* Compostable in commercial composting facilities
* 5-year shelf life in dry environments
* Heat-resistant to 185°F
* Sturdy feel, stronger than starch plant based cutlery
* All inner bag packaging utilizes compostable films"
As a consumer I'm not sure what this means. If you can't compost the plastic sleeves they'd tell you, right. . .? I wrote to the company for clarification and will update this posting if/when I hear from them. In the meantime I have stored the sleeves in a compostable bag, and will probably toss them in the regular landfill trash if I don't hear back. If anyone has better info please post, thanks!

Packaging disappointment Dec 07, 2009 I ordered these biodegradable utensils for a party we will be hosting, and wanted to be toss them into our city-sponsored commercial compost bin. While the utensils are ok -- they're not the largest or sturdiest biodegradable/compostable utensils I've seen -- imagine my utter dismay when they arrived, and each of the 250 utensil sets (1 each fork/spoon/knife), was individually wrapped in plastic! I was stunned. I had ordered these in an effort to reduce waste, but instead ended up created more because I had to unwrap each set to get at the forks I needed for birthday cake. I re-read the product description to ensure I hadn't missed something, but there is no indication that I could find that these come individually wrapped. Moreover, while it's possible that the plastic wrapping is itself biodegradable or compostable, I couldn't find any information so indicating, so had no alternative but to assume it is plastic and throw the wrappings in the trash. Had that information been disclosed and made known when I purchased these, I would have steered clear.

Great idea but too small.... Oct 29, 2008 Unfortunately, the product description doesn't mention the size. I've been looking for biodegradable products for a party we are hosting. I was very excited when I found these and read the positive reviews. However, when they arrived today, I saw that the knife, fork, and spoon are barely 6 inches. Disappointing, I won't be able to use these child size utensils for a dinner. They seem sturdy and would be fine for casual occasions. Anyway, I'm still looking for full-size environmentally friendly cutlery, despite my need to use disposables.
