 Poor for the environment; expensive replacement pads and cleaning solution Jan 25, 2010
The product is O.K. for it's purpose. I'm unable to use my own solution for cleaning. I live in a small town and am having difficulty finding the refill pads. It would have been nice to have a washable, reuseable pad, both as a money saving feature and to further protect the environment. Would not purchase had I realized.

I've been going nuts trying to find a happy medium between getting down on my knees and scrubbing my floor, and using a mop which doesn't seem to accomplish too much beyond moving progressively dirtier water around the floor. I think the Swiffer might be the answer, but only with modifications. Let me start with lists, I love lists:
Pros: Eliminates the need for a bucket of filthy water, sprays just as much cleaning solution as you want, pad sucks up dirty solution and holds it, pad also holds on to dirt, and is disposable.
Cons: Cleaning solution REEKS. Seriously it just stinks. (Why do they make these things so perfume-y?) Possibility that solution is toxic to animals, and by extension could be equally toxic to small humans. (There are arguments on both sides.) Does leave streaks, particularly on wood. "Scrubber" strip is not only difficult to use it's not very good at its job. Proprietary design makes using any other product with the Swiffer impossible.
Or does it? Because the cleaning solution smelled so horrible to me -- and granted I'm hyper-sensitive to synthetic scents, but even my housemate said "What is that SMELL?" -- I went looking for a solution solution. And of course the internet, source of all wisdom, provided an answer. You actually can get the cap off the solution bottle if you warm it under hot water, and use a pair of pliers to twist it off. Then you can replace their solution with your own. This has the added advantage of saving a chunk of change.
So, armed with a newly charged bottle of Dargie's Homemade Swiffer Juice, I rewashed the floor I'd done the night before and let me tell you the results were shocking. I didn't even spend as much time over the job as I had last night, and still the pad came away black with dirt! For all its vaunted dirt dissolving, the Swiffer cleaning solution appears not to be very good at getting all the dirt up. So this morning my floors are substantially cleaner, the house smells better, and I am no longer worried about the cats ingesting any stray chemicals.
I will say that you do have to get up as much loose dirt and dust as you can before you mop, but that's essentially true of any mop. But I can also tell you that unless you seriously over-do the spraying, your floors will dry quickly, which means there's less chance of slipping on a stubbornly wet bit, or leaving footprints.
Some people don't like the fact that the pads are disposable, and I get that. Apparently you can make your own pads out of microfiber. I reserve judgment on that at this point because I find that these pads are constructed to handle a whole lot of dirt and liquid, and I'm not sure I believe that microfiber will do the same.
The bottom line is that I do recommend this product, but I also recommend that you give some thought to modifying it if it doesn't suit you. In spite of attempts to make all of this proprietary, you can hack your Swiffer pretty easily.

I have twin toddlers and the floors get filthy fast if I don't stay right on top of cleaning them, and that just wasn't practical with a mop and bucket. This has been a great purchase for me - the floors stay much cleaner. The big advantage to this mop is that it is convenient and easy to use. A key component is there is no cord to plug in, it runs on batteries. I looked into the steamers and decided that the cord was going to make a significant difference day to day.
I refill the detergent container with water and I can swoosh it quickly over the floors any time it's needed without worrying if the toddlers step on it or breathe any scents/fumes. It cleans extremely well with just water. I'm very pleased. The first two times I refilled the container I needed to soak the top of it in very hot water for about 20 seconds before it would twist off. From the third reuse and onwards I have just been able to twist it off easily each time.
I would not have given it 5 stars if I couldn't refill the container, and if they change the design so that I can't do that I will stop using it. Although their cleaning detergent does get the floor clean, it has a strong artificial scent and I do not trust it around small children. I don't want them inhaling any of the chemicals that are so often in cleaning products and about which research keeps discovering more and more harm.

I purchased one of these for a relative that recently had heart surgery, and needed something a bit easier to use than a mop and a bucket. I was so impressed with it, that I purchased one myself, to replace my Clorox Ready Mop, which always leaked from the sprayer, and left "drops" of cleaning solution all over.
The sprayer on the WetJet is powerful with the assistance of battery operation, and the complaints about the fact that it sprays on furniture legs and walls, etc., is better left to the spacially challenged. If you can't figure out that you should probably spray a distance from your furniture, and THEN push the mop closer to the furniture, then you probably shouldn't be mopping anyting in the first place.
I've also read poor reviews, citing that the pads look like a sanitary napkin.
I didn't know that cleaning pads had to be aesthetically pleasing, and if that's important to you, try an Herme scarf or something. The pads are very absorbent, and don't leave streaks if you don't use a lot of solution which is unecessary in the first place. Our home has a lot of tile, laminate, and sealed hardwood, and well within the first use of the Wetjet, you can get a feel for how much solution you really need.
We have pets in our home, and do not use anything in the home that is offensive or toxic, so refilling the bottle with a natural solution was key. I had heard that the bottle was not refillable, so I went online and did about 30 seconds of research. Heating the cap and twisting it off works like a charm, but for those of you who didn't bother to beg the question, well, please move to the line with those who cannot gauge the projected length of the spray.
I am meticulous about cleaning, and get a good bit of mileage from one pad. They are much more economical to use than other pads that I've purchased, and while they do have a coating, the inner fiber breaks down, unlike a lot of other pad products that are woven synthetics. If you are complaining that it pushes the dirt around, I have a word of advice for you - VACUUM FIRST!!! I can't imagine anyone not vacuuming up any debris or loose dirt before mopping. (That line is getting larger)
If you want to clean your floors so that fine miniscule black dots will come clean, then get down on your knees and clean your floors by hand, which we do about one a month, but for everyday cleaning, this thing rocks!!!

I bought the product in hopes of that it would do better than the regular Swiffer mop. Here is my pros & cons:
Pros: It has the best scrubbing pads I've seen. Better than the regular mop.
and that is it...
Cons: 1.) The scrubbing pads are not reusable. So if you use it for a small job, you would need to use a new pad for another cleaning job. 2.) The device only uses ALKALINE Batteries and WILL NOT use any kind of rechargable batteries. 3.) You need to be carefull with the spray trigger. When I handle it and keep mistakenly push the button for the liquid cleaning solution to shoot out.
With throwing away those big cleaning pads and 4 AA batteries, the Swiffer Wet Jet creates more waste than it cleans. They need to remake the item with reusable/washable cleaning pads and either the ability to use rechargable batteries or have a built in rechargeable battery to charge with an adapter or charging dock.
